Looking Forward To April!

April is great! It means that spring will finally begin to feel like it’s here, the world will get all pretty and bright again, birds will happily chirp and sing,  and *I* will happily say goodbye to another Michigan winter!

There are quite a few things coming up this month that I can’t wait to post about.   First thing on the list is that I’ll be  taking part in the Chevy Girls on the Go program! I will be test driving a new Chevy and blogging/vlogging about it! And you know that with me,  that will mean tons of pictures too!

I will be driving a Cruze, a Malibu, or a Traverse and I can’t decide which I like the most! I think the Cruze might be the cutest, but the Malibu looks cool too, and I’ve heard some really awesome things about the features on the Traverse. So I’m thinking I’m going to be thrilled no matter how it goes.

I’m looking forward to my month of adventures with a shiny new Chevy and can’t wait to get started! It’s going to be so fun! I’m getting so impatient for the end of this week!

Vlogging will be kind of a new experience for me too so I’m really looking forward to that part as well!

Site link to come soon, and be sure to go check out and “Like” the Mid-Michigan Chevy on the Go Facebook page!

Love, Laughter, Fun! – Saginaw Family Photographer

I love when I can capture families being silly and adorable together.  And getting to watch people who love each other interact. It’s one of my favorite things as a photographer. I was so happy to take family photos for D for her birthday. I love her. She’s sweet and lovely and makes me laugh until I get hiccups! It was awesome getting to spend a morning with her and her beautiful family! It was a good morning for it – a little chilly out but bright and pretty.

I really like Harvey Randall Wickes Park. It’s actually where I had my high school graduation party. Longer ago than it seems like it should have been. Man, I feel old! Ok, not really. But it was a while back. Back to the park. It’s big, attractive, and is a great place to have a session. There are plenty of grassy tree areas and paths, but also a pond, and a children’s play area. So you can easily mix up the look of your photos without ever needing to leave. Bonus!

Happy Birthday To Me!!

It’s my birthday! And guess what! I’m going to give away some presents! Yup, you read that right. I’m going to give you presents for *my* birthday. How awesome is that??

I came up with a few things that I really dig that I’d like to give away. There are three prizes to win, three ways to enter, and there will be three winners winning at the end!

First, the prizes:

1. Chocolatey goodness! I’m really a fan of Easter candy. It’s my absolute favorite holiday for candy. Prize one is a bag of Cadbury Mini Eggs with their crunchy candy shell + a bag of pretty pastel colored Easter M&Ms.

2. Prize two is a 200 ml bottle of Raspberry Balsamic Vinegar from The Great Lakes Olive Oil Co. and a bar of dark chocolate. I highly recommend you also try this drizzled over your favorite vanilla ice cream.

3. Prize three is a sample of my favorite coffee of the moment and some dark chocolate hot cocoa mix to go with it. I love mixing them together to make my own version of a mocha. It’s not a real mocha, I know, but it makes me happy and it’s really good.

How to enter:

1. Leave a comment on this entry telling me your favorite birthday memory.

2. For an additional entry, “Like” Photography by Wendy on facebook, then come back here and leave a second comment letting me know that you did.

3. For another additional entry, post as your Facebook status: I want to win fabulous prizes from @Photography by Wendy’s birthday giveaway! http://wendyseye.com/2011/03/20/happy-birthday-to-me/

  10. Tamara says: My favorite birthday memory is from 2009. I lived in Virginia, but I drove to Michigan (on my own for the first time!). At the time, I was going through a divorce, and I really wanted to be with my "family"--my close friends. My birthday was on a Sunday, so I was able to see a lot of people and do a lot of things that weekend. On my birthday, one of my friends and her family took me out for a birthday lunch. I was flattered that most of her siblings and her parents were there. My friend's mother passed away in 2010 from a long illness. This memory is dear to me because I got to spend my birthday with a dear friend, whom I've known since the first day of high school; her amazing, hilarious, caring family; and her mother, whom I've always admired. It was a great chance to get away from the heartbreak that was happening in Virginia, enjoy time with loved ones, and feel "normal" again. on 03.27.11 @ 3:34 pm

  13. Jessica G says: There is nothing NOT to love about my birthday, including double negatives! It's October 31st, so every year my birthday party was a costume party too. My favorite birthday memories are the cakes my family used to make. She was always so clever, They were in the shapes of cats or ghosts or little graveyards. I took it for granted when I was little, but now I really appreciate how special they were. on 03.27.11 @ 4:50 pm

I heart the Great Lakes Olive Oil Co. <3

Great Lakes Olive Oil Co.

A while back, my grandma told me she saw a story in the paper about a new store that had opened up in Frankenmuth at River Place. A store that really intrigued me, as it’s full of olive oils and balsamic vinegars! I like to cook and I *really* like to eat, so I decided I needed to check this place out as soon as I got the opportunity.

I am so glad I did! I found so much to love at the Great Lakes Olive Oil Co.! I’ve been there a few times now and after the first visit, I knew I wanted to write something here on the blog. I fell in love with the fruit flavored balsamic vinegars and with an unexpected oil and vinegar combination I never would have thought to try. I brought home the Strawberry Balsamic and the Raspberry Balsamic and I’ve been testing them out every chance I get! So far my favorite way? Dessert! They are delightful drizzled over vanilla ice cream and with a good dark chocolate. SO GOOD. If you are local, you need to go there. If you are not local, you need to order some and have it sent to you. I personally have tried and recommend the Strawberry, Raspberry, Peach, and Cinnamon Pear vinegars; and the Tuscan Herb, Garlic, and Sage and Mushroom Olive Oils. Try the Sage and Mushroom with the Cinnamon Pear on chicken. It’s seriously one of the best things I have ever eaten. Ever. EVER.

The shop itself is bright and open and just begs to have photos taken inside. So I did!

Great Lakes Olive Oil Co.

Great Lakes Olive Oil Co.

Great Lakes Olive Oil Co.

The owner, Elyse, was kind enough to answer some questions I had. Yay!

What is your favorite oil?
Chipotle

Favorite vinegar?
Espresso

Favorite combination?
Herbs de Provence Olive Oil & Traditional 18 Yr. Balsamic Vinegar

How would you describe your cooking style?
Random. I like to try new things. I am not much of a recipe follower so I start with a recipe and then add and subtract ingredients at will. (Wendy note: I do this too!)

What is your favorite part about the business?
I love meeting new people. People have very different experiences with cooking, especially with Olive Oil and Balsamic Vinegar. It is fun to open up people’s minds on the possibilities that Olive Oil and Balsamic Vinegar can bring to their cooking.

What task would you never touch again if you didn’t have to?
Unloading 4,500 lbs of our glass bottles. Tough work. Once we unload them from the truck then we have to wash them all. That is a lot of glass bottles!

Is there any dessert item that *wouldn’t* go well with a fruit balsamic?
I love cookies! Because I love them so much I want them just plain in their deliciousness, no extra flavors needed.

What lesson do we learn from Humpty Dumpty?
What I get from Humpty Dumpty may vary from what others do. The lesson I see is that things don’t always go exactly as planned, they may “fall” and break but you have to adapt and keep trying. This really goes along with my outlook on life!

Are you a morning person, afternoon person, or a night owl?
Afternoon.

Do you still have your childhood cuddly toy?
I do not

What’s the most unusual oil/vinegar combination you’ve tried and liked?
Harissa Olive Oil and Peach Balsamic Vinegar

Any current particularly awesome special things you’d like to highlight?

Look at those cheeks! – Saginaw Newborn Photographer

This baby girl was everything I could have hoped for. Sweet, soft, chubby perfection. She put up with me moving her all over the place and stayed sleepy almost all the way. I took these right before I acquired a bunch of newborn props. I so so wish I would have gotten them just a little bit earlier! Fortunately mom had some of her own stuff on hand, like that adorable hat in the third photo from Bouquet Beanies. It’s the “Twisted” hat and you can get interchangeable flowers to go with it, to change the look of your hat in seconds. I can’t wait to order one of my own! It’s going to be so hard to choose which flowers I want!

Lovely Lady – Saginaw Portrait Photographer

When I was contacted by a former co-worker about doing a session I was super excited. Not only is D gorgeous, but she’s fun, funny, and sweet as well! And just look at that great smile!

We wandered down to old town Saginaw but it was so so windy that day so we went looking for a suitable place indoors. And I have to say, D had the perfect place in mind. Jackpot! There is a building on Hamilton that has a number of suites inside and some great light, texture, and overall mood. I *love* this place. We wandered around exploring for a bit and I gathered ideas. While we were there, I fell in love with one of the suites. Great space, perfect for me in so many ways. When I get an office, I want it to be like that! And the rest of the building… awesome! Love it!

I am thrilled with the images we captured that day. And I hope D is as thrilled with them as I am!

Splish Splash! – Saginaw Child Photographer

I cannot wait for warm weather to get here! There has been so much snow and so much cold! I’m over it! Done! Sadly, nature doesn’t work on my schedule. So I’m pretty sure I have a while to wait. We have had a few days that have been a little nicer. And some sun that even feels warm! But, of course, those days are mixed in with days full of snow.

These are from last May on a brilliantly sunny day. I was sitting with K for a bit while she splashed around in her pool. Can’t wait until it’s warm enough for this again!

The Lovely Holly – Saginaw Maternity Photographer

I really love that I was able to capture Holly’s baby journey, from maternity portraits, to the birth session, to the newborn portraits afterward. We were able to capture so many beautiful images that I just LOVE.

We did the maternity portraits in two segments. We went to Ojibway Island in the evening, and then the next morning. We finished off the second part of the session at Holly’s home with some fairly naked black and white shots (ooh la la!) The light on the island is gorgeous in the morning! I love the way the weeping willows look with the golden light shining through the leaves. Perfection.

Here are some of my favorites from Holly’s maternity sessions. Enjoy!

Fun Family Session – Saginaw Family Photographer

This family only gets everyone together a few times a year. While they had everyone in one place, they wanted to have a family portrait session. They were staying at the Holiday Inn Express, which had a lovely lobby area. It was all decorated up for the holidays in silver, turquoise, and pink. They had a big Christmas tree in front of a fireplace. Really, very nice. I thoroughly approve!

This was a fun group. Everyone had a great time, talking, laughing, teasing. So the session seemed to take no time at all. Here are a few images that I particularly liked.

Happy Birthday Mozart!

01/27/11 music

Today a post on twitter about Mozart‘s birthday got me thinking about my own history with Mozart, and with music in general.

When I was younger, I played the piano. Over the years, it somehow gradually became less and less a part of my life. I started taking lessons when I was 8 and played until my early 20s. I had other music lessons in high school and in college, though my real love and focus was the piano. I always had a particular fondness for the Baroque and Classical period. I liked to play a lot of J.S. Bach and Mozart. The music was fun to play and I loved how it sounded.

I really find myself missing it, especially since I no longer have a piano. When I hear a piece of music that I used to play, my fingers get all twitchy and will automatically start forming the right motions, playing along on whatever surface is handy. I can’t even help it. It feels weird to not play!

It was interesting, I did take some time off for a while and then went back to it. I found that my brain knew what to do and I had the muscle memory, but I had lost a lot of the hand strength that I once had. It was frustrating to know exactly what I was supposed to be doing but to not have my hands cooperate.

I hope to have a piano again in the future. Until then, poor Mozart is in storage. Happy Birthday, Mozart! I miss you!
