It’s like magic! But not really. But kinda!

I’m excited! This weekend I should have a radio ad running on WIOG! Yay! Recently, I met with the guy who is going to make that happen and we worked out the details of what I want to include.

I had been to the building where they’re located, but it had been a looooong time. So it was On-Star to the rescue again! I just can’t get over how fast and easy it is. You just push the button, let them know where you’re trying to go, and before you know it, the directions are there and you’re off!

Happy Birthday Mikale!

Mikale with Flux Capacitor Cake

Mikale’s birthday party was last weekend. I was in charge of getting his cake from my friend Heather and transporting it to the party. Eep! So much pressure! I was all worried that it would slide around in the trunk and something would smush something. Or something. I don’t know! I just didn’t want to mess up the cake. Especially since it was so cool!

Mikale is really in to Back to the Future and so our mother had a Flux Capacitor cake made for him. And it turned out really well! So neat looking!

I drove as carefully as a person can. I was still nervous because you never know what to expect with the roads in the spring. They tend to be at their bumpiest this time of year. So I was really glad that the Cruze is so smooth. Bud I’d hardly know I was driving on spring roads. Woo hoo! That, combined with my extra careful driving, meant that the Flux Capacitor cake arrived without any smushing at all. (But note my super nervous voice when I was still a little unsure about how it all went! ha!)

And Mikale loved the cake! Of course. How could he not?? Such a cool idea! We didn’t even want to cut it. But, alas, we could only look at it for so long, as there were lots of children who were much more ready to eat cake than admire it! NOMNOMNOM! 🙂

Easter Egg Hunt!

I had a lot of fun hiding eggs in the Cruze and Mikale had a lot of fun searching for them. Also, he really amuses me.

I had already gotten a ton of videos when my video camera died. So sad! And now it’s holding all those great videos hostage in it’s little dead body. Grrrr. I managed to get some new videos taken, but you are missing out on Mikale saying some amusing things. Fortunately, you get to see Mikale say new amusing things.

There are more places to put eggs in the Cruze than one might think and it was neat to explore the whole car looking for them.

Many videos, be amused:

Why, Michigan, why??? – Mid-Michigan Chevy Girls

So it snowed on Monday. It’s April. This just shouldn’t happen! Stupid Michigan weather. At some points, it wasn’t so much snowing as it was slushing. Bleah. And I had places to go! So I really hoped that the Cruze would handle well on yucky roads. It passed the test! It even alerted me that the roads might be icy and to be careful. (Aww, thanks Cruze!)

04/03/11 snow

It was great on the road and, as a result, I was able to go out to lunch with a friend, and out for some shopping afterward and the only cursing I had to do was at the yuckiness falling from the sky! The restaurant almost always has a packed parking lot, which stresses me out. Backing up is especially bad because there just never feels like there is enough room to maneuver. The Cruze has sensors in the back that will alert you with beeping if you start to get too close to something! Helpful! It definitely helped with parking lot stress. (See the video below, I recorded a demo later when I wasn’t actually stressed out about backing up. A much better time to do it!)

Later in the day, I went to pick up my grandma to bring her back to my house for a private screening of Killing Kevin. She’s been waiting impatiently for it to be done because she supplied one of the props and she wanted to see it in action. I found her a couple of XM Radio stations that play Classical music so she was happy. Speaking of the XM Radio. There are so many stations! All different kinds of music, plus some talk radio (not my thing, but hey, if you’re into it, it’s there!) So far I’ve been happiest that there’s a 90’s station. Yay!

Oh, what an exciting day it was!

04/01/11 day 1 blog collage 1

I had such a hard time falling asleep the night before. I was excited and nervous and my brain just would not shut off. And then before I knew it, the alarm was going off (so early!) and it was time to start the day! And a pretty, bright, and sunny day it was!

I was nervous and felt a little nauseated as a result. I was only able to drink about half of my coffee (*cries*) and didn’t really want to eat anything. We got to the end of the loooooooong, driveway and I saw two chicas, one with pink and blonde hair (Jamie!)  and one tall, tall, blonde (Katie!)

Jamie and Katie got me settled into our room, which was supplied with noms and balloons. Soon after, we were joined by my adorably pregnant fellow blogger, Megan Burleson! I also got to meet our newest blogger addition, Elizabeth MacFarland of NBC 25!

We went over all the paperwork and I signed my soul away (x3!) and then it was time to see the Chevy goodness! Ok, not really on the soul part.

Megan’s Traverse arrived first. Then Liz’s Traverse. And then. Then! Along came my Cruze! So cute! So new! So shiny! So much better than my usual!

Everyone was so awesome and so nice! And I completely forgot to be nervous once I was there. Except for the parts where I was on camera. Then all I managed to think about was OMG WHAT IF I LOOK SUPER DUMB RIGHT NOW??? I didn’t get the chance to see it when it aired, but I’m choosing to believe that it all went well and that I didn’t look dumb at all.  They wanted one final shot of me driving off in the Cruze and then I was off! And on to the next part of my day!

I went straight to my grandma’s and took her for a ride. We drove to see my mother at work for a minute and made use of the bluetooth capabilities on the way. So neat to be able to just talk while I’m driving without having to worry about messing with the phone at all! It’s voice activated and all I had to do was say the number I wanted to call! How cool is that??

My next stop was WNEM TV5’s station because I’m going to have an ad on their AM radio station! (Yay!) This actually had nothing to do with my Chevy blogging at all and was just a business promo with their ad side. But, while I was there, the news side wanted to do a little interview too, about the Chevy blogging. So that was unexpected and cool! I posted the link on facebook, but here it is if you missed it: Wendy on TV5!

Then I was all done being publicized and went back to a more or less normal day. I went back to my grandma’s and picked her up to go do some banking and shopping. We fit all of our stuff in the trunk with room to spare. It’s surprisingly roomy in there.

That night, I went out to see Source Code (I liked it!) and afterward the day really caught up with me and I was so ready for bed!

I heart the Great Lakes Olive Oil Co. <3

Great Lakes Olive Oil Co.

A while back, my grandma told me she saw a story in the paper about a new store that had opened up in Frankenmuth at River Place. A store that really intrigued me, as it’s full of olive oils and balsamic vinegars! I like to cook and I *really* like to eat, so I decided I needed to check this place out as soon as I got the opportunity.

I am so glad I did! I found so much to love at the Great Lakes Olive Oil Co.! I’ve been there a few times now and after the first visit, I knew I wanted to write something here on the blog. I fell in love with the fruit flavored balsamic vinegars and with an unexpected oil and vinegar combination I never would have thought to try. I brought home the Strawberry Balsamic and the Raspberry Balsamic and I’ve been testing them out every chance I get! So far my favorite way? Dessert! They are delightful drizzled over vanilla ice cream and with a good dark chocolate. SO GOOD. If you are local, you need to go there. If you are not local, you need to order some and have it sent to you. I personally have tried and recommend the Strawberry, Raspberry, Peach, and Cinnamon Pear vinegars; and the Tuscan Herb, Garlic, and Sage and Mushroom Olive Oils. Try the Sage and Mushroom with the Cinnamon Pear on chicken. It’s seriously one of the best things I have ever eaten. Ever. EVER.

The shop itself is bright and open and just begs to have photos taken inside. So I did!

Great Lakes Olive Oil Co.

Great Lakes Olive Oil Co.

Great Lakes Olive Oil Co.

The owner, Elyse, was kind enough to answer some questions I had. Yay!

What is your favorite oil?
Chipotle

Favorite vinegar?
Espresso

Favorite combination?
Herbs de Provence Olive Oil & Traditional 18 Yr. Balsamic Vinegar

How would you describe your cooking style?
Random. I like to try new things. I am not much of a recipe follower so I start with a recipe and then add and subtract ingredients at will. (Wendy note: I do this too!)

What is your favorite part about the business?
I love meeting new people. People have very different experiences with cooking, especially with Olive Oil and Balsamic Vinegar. It is fun to open up people’s minds on the possibilities that Olive Oil and Balsamic Vinegar can bring to their cooking.

What task would you never touch again if you didn’t have to?
Unloading 4,500 lbs of our glass bottles. Tough work. Once we unload them from the truck then we have to wash them all. That is a lot of glass bottles!

Is there any dessert item that *wouldn’t* go well with a fruit balsamic?
I love cookies! Because I love them so much I want them just plain in their deliciousness, no extra flavors needed.

What lesson do we learn from Humpty Dumpty?
What I get from Humpty Dumpty may vary from what others do. The lesson I see is that things don’t always go exactly as planned, they may “fall” and break but you have to adapt and keep trying. This really goes along with my outlook on life!

Are you a morning person, afternoon person, or a night owl?
Afternoon.

Do you still have your childhood cuddly toy?
I do not

What’s the most unusual oil/vinegar combination you’ve tried and liked?
Harissa Olive Oil and Peach Balsamic Vinegar

Any current particularly awesome special things you’d like to highlight?
Great Lakes Olive Oil has started hosting private tasting parties in our store after hours for any group of people that are interested. To inquire just call the store or e-mail us!

Happy Birthday Mozart!

01/27/11 music

Today a post on twitter about Mozart‘s birthday got me thinking about my own history with Mozart, and with music in general.

When I was younger, I played the piano. Over the years, it somehow gradually became less and less a part of my life. I started taking lessons when I was 8 and played until my early 20s. I had other music lessons in high school and in college, though my real love and focus was the piano. I always had a particular fondness for the Baroque and Classical period. I liked to play a lot of J.S. Bach and Mozart. The music was fun to play and I loved how it sounded.

I really find myself missing it, especially since I no longer have a piano. When I hear a piece of music that I used to play, my fingers get all twitchy and will automatically start forming the right motions, playing along on whatever surface is handy. I can’t even help it. It feels weird to not play!

It was interesting, I did take some time off for a while and then went back to it. I found that my brain knew what to do and I had the muscle memory, but I had lost a lot of the hand strength that I once had. It was frustrating to know exactly what I was supposed to be doing but to not have my hands cooperate.

I hope to have a piano again in the future. Until then, poor Mozart is in storage. Happy Birthday, Mozart! I miss you!

This really makes me miss summer – Saginaw Photographer

07/17/10 field

I captured this last summer as I was driving home from my family reunion. I love when I find things that catch my eye enough to make me want to pull my car over just so that I don’t miss the moment.

I want to be better about posting this year. I tend to forget to share my personal projects. I’m going to work on that!

I really like the color and texture in this image. It also reminds me of the time I spent in Chicoutimi, Quebec, on a study trip. It was beautiful there and I love that I had the opportunity to have the experience. Isn’t that neat how the smallest things can trigger happy memories?
